Overview

Global Forest Watch <http://www.globalforestwatch.org/> (GFW) is an
interactive online forest monitoring and alert system designed to empower
people everywhere with the information they need to better manage and
conserve forest landscapes. The Global Forest Watch partnership is convened
by WRI, but consists of over 60 partners. Since GFW’s launch one year ago,
the platform has been growing rapidly to meet user needs. We are currently
engaged in a major effort to incorporate more contextual information, such
as geospatial data on forest and land use, into the GFW platform to better
analyze drivers of deforestation and land use change. The Data & Website
Research Assistant (RA) will play a key role in expanding GFW by ensuring
new data is added and displayed on the website in a timely manner.

The Data & Website Research Assistant (RA) will work closely with the Data
and Website teams to streamline and manage the process for incorporating
new geospatial data into the GFW platform. This will include researching
new data sets, maintaining tracking documents, coordinating with multiple
team members, assessing data quality and completeness, cleaning GIS data,
and other tasks related to the “data pipeline” process. The Data & Website
RA will also act as the data-website liaison, coordinating with GFW’s web
developers to ensure that data is displayed correctly and to improve
visualization of data.
Responsibilities

- *Operate the GFW data pipeline process (60%)*
- Efficiently move data through all steps of the pipeline process
- Assess new and proposed data sets for quality and completeness
- Update and maintain internal data pipeline tracking documents
- Coordinate with backend data staff to streamline frontend to
backend process
- Communicate with third-party data providers to obtain data sharing
agreements, sign off on dataset descriptions, and archive all data sharing
agreements
- Clean and process GIS data as needed; write or edit metadata
- Help create and manage map services with ArcGIS Server/ArcGIS
Online or CartoDB
- Assist in developing and maintaining the GFW Open Data Portal
- Conduct research to identify new geospatial data sets relevant to
the Global Forest Watch mission


- *Liaise with web development team (20%)*
- Act as point person for web developers on data-related matters
- Work with GFW web developers to determine how to best visualize new
data sets data
- Identify ways to clearly communicate data limitations and
uncertainties
- Update data descriptions, download links, citations etc. as needed
- Ensure all data providers are credited appropriately on the GFW
website
- *Data Outreach and Communication (20%)*
- Analyze new data to glean policy-relevant insights and contribute
to blog posts as needed
- Provide Story Maps, animated GIFs, maps or other features for blog
posts
- Work with the Monitoring & Evaluation Team to develop metrics
related to data and update these metrics for reporting
- Produce summary documents for partners and donors that showcase
what data are on GFW
- Post about data news or issues to the GFW Discussion Group

Qualifications

*Required*

- Bachelor’s degree in geography, environmental science, international
development, or other related field
- Minimum 1 year relevant experience required, internship experience may
be counted.
- A demonstrated interest in environmental issues, data, and technology
- Demonstrated GIS skills and/or an interest in honing those skills
- Experience with Esri ArcGIS software required; open-source GIS
software like QGIS a plus
- Highly process- and detail-oriented
- Strong organization skills and an aptitude for task management
- Ability to respectfully manage up
- A demonstrated willingness to take initiative and complete tasks with
little guidance
- A team player, but also able to move things forward independently
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Creative problem-solver who likes to be challenged


- Ability to quickly test ideas, identify tradeoffs, and recommend next
steps
*Desired*

- Basic programming skills (Python, Javascript, SQL, HTML), experience
with GitHub, and knowledge of CartoDB or other mapping technologies are a
plus
- Familiarity with ArcGIS Online, including uploading data and
developing web maps
- Ability to quickly learn new technologies, architectures, and best
practices

*Final candidate will be required to take a writing test.*
