(English) Offline topo map of Russia for Android devices

We startet to create a topographic map of Russia about a year ago. The offline map is based on data from the OpenStreetMap project and is aimed at users of Android devices. The initial russian supporter has unfortunately left the project. Now we want to start a new attempt. In a first step the map content should be verified.

Question: Are there people here who could make a quality check of the maps?

what do you mean under veryfiing? Should the man walk through the city and check if the map is correct? Or just compare the original OSM and your map?

First, it's pretty hard to call any map, based on OSM data only, a "topographic map".
OSM has poor tagging scheme for landforms, and even existing one is misused pretty often by Russian mappers (for example, 90% of "cliffs" are actually edges of gullies). So, it's closer to road map anyway.

Second, OSM data have extremely different quality and detail level in different regions. For example, Bryansk town, which is relatively big, has only about four active mappers, therefore quality of data there is poor.

Third, what's the difference between your map rendering style and others? I can see that it's pretty similar to default "Mapnik" style from osm.org

Could you please, clarify your idea of "verification".

You can find more information about the Android Freizeitkarte maps here: http://freizeitkarte-osm.de

Verification: Very simple ... install one or more maps on your Android device (smartphone, tablet) and use them in your daily life and/or in your leisure time. And then rate the usability ... that's all. Find the things that first (before publishing) must be improved.

Topographic map: Contour lines (elevations) are derived from SRTM data, or where available, from improved data from viewfinderpanoramas.org.

Theme: Yes, the map design is close to the Mapnik design but differs in a lot of points (eg. the number of tracktypes are simplified from 5 to 3 etc.). Another theme (outdoor) is also available.

Test maps are available for the following federation districts:
- Central FD
- North Caucasian FD
- Northwestern FD (without Kaliningrad, Franz-Josef-Land, Nowaja Semlja)
- Southern FD
- Volga FD

OSM mapping: The mapping in russia differs a little from the mapping in other countries. One example is the place tag
for allotments (which is supported by the map). But I'm sure that there is more "special russian tagging" currently not supported by the map. Tell us which OSM features you additional would like to see on the maps.

Poor vs. excellent OSM mapping: Yes you are right, OSM mapping is very heterogeneous. Some areas are gathered poor, others are gathered excellent. That's the current state of OSM, but everyone can help to improve the data.

In short I can provide download links to the test maps. Let me know if there is interest ...

OK, then it's just "subjective evaluation", not "verification", because verifications should be conducted against reference data and/or formal requirements. And again, non-homogenous quality of OSM data eliminates any sense of local evaluation - it's well-known, that major cities and some regions are mapped pretty well, so it's enough to use these data, but there is no way to evaluate single errors, for example.
So, you can just use these data with no hesitation - verification you are talking about will not give any useful information.

Speaking of SRTM - Russian territory (especially, where the most of major cities are located) is pretty flat, therefore, size of actual landform details is comparable with size of SRTM artifacts. For example, SRTM shows roads going through the forest as "trenches", because it's not normalized by subtraction of tree height. Technically, there is almost no sense in adding horizontals from it to the map, because it will add false details. You can probably use much lower resolution DEM, like GTOPO30 or downsampled and interpolated SRTM to get rough contour lines, but in the same time - to avoid false details.

We have publish release 14.12 of the Freizeitkarte maps including the european part of russia.
The Freizeitkarte maps (edition 14.12) are based on OpenStreetMap data from 2014/12/07.
Thanks to all the mappers for their contribution to the OSM project.

Change log for release 14.12:
- general improvement of the map data (by the OSM project)
- maps for all european countries and regions
- all countries as plus maps (border plus 30-50 km)
- improved support for the Android app OruxMaps

Next release:
The next release is planned for mid of February 2015.
