question - maps and coordinates

Hello,
I am new in this field and I can not seem to find all the information I need, that's why I'm asking for your help. I need for a project to have some maps that also have geographical coordinates as information. Is that possible? Or what other formats are there to be used to create an application for distance calculations, something resembling an offline gps?
